2015 Deck – Week 24

In today’s world, it often seems that the old tradition of “family” has fallen by the wayside.  The divorces are common, marriages not worth fighting for, child abuse seems more commonplace than before, parents and children yelling at each other; it even seems sometimes that some people care more for their pet than for their own flesh and blood relatives, so when I saw a father and son working together on a motorcycle, I just had to sneak a photo of it.

It may not always be this way, but like much of our lives, its these moments that matter most.

2012 Deck – Week 48

Santa Claus, a mythical figure whose fame has spanned centuries, but is he only a myth or is he real?

The story of Santa Claus can be found in Legends, Myths, History and Folklore, and the names vary through the years and across land boundaries, but one thing remains the same, the IDEA that there is a person, an entity who gives gifts unselfishly to children, usually on the eve of Christmas so that on Christmas Day they awaken to presents.

For me, this Idea, IS  Santa Claus, this is what we want to believe in and keep the tradition going.  Was there ever a man with a long white beard who went house to house giving gifts to children?  I’d say that it was likely.  Did he dress in a red suit and have eight (or nine) reindeer pulling his sleigh through the skies?  Probably not  🙂

As Christmas approaches, I wish you all the best for the Season of Christmas.

2012 Deck – Week 22

All of my photographs from this week came from two family functions, so, not surprisingly, it will be a photo of a family member (members).

I had just gotten hold of a 50mm lens for my camera, what many call a Nifty Fifty, having never shot with a fixed lens on the SLR before I thought it was a good time to try my hand out.  It was fun, I had to “zoom” with my feet, but the framing and composition were easier to deal with than I had originally thought, since I’ve always used a zoom lens of one type or the other (wide zooms and telephoto zooms)

Since many people who have seen my photography know that I don’t do photographs of “people” a lot, this is quite a departure for me, I hope you like it.

2012 Deck – Week 10

In the first few years after my daughter was born, I took photos (snapshots) of her every chance I got, but for some reason, as time went by I took less and less.  She now poses “too much”  🙂

On Phagwah day I deliberately asked her to pose for me, and got a nice portrait of her  🙂

I don’t often do portraits or posed “people” photos, I’m just not very good at it, so when I do try it and get at least one good one, I feel happy  🙂

2011 Deck – Week 48

Because I am behind schedule posting my Deck images this year, it is co-incidental that the image for the 48th Week is actually appropriate for today, the day I am posting it…

Everyone has beliefs, even if you say you don’t believe in anything, that in itself is a belief.  I believe in Santa Claus!  Maybe not the person, but the idea, the idea of giving, of making children happy, even of the stories and the legends that surround this figure.

I like to be a child again every Christmas and believe in the magic of giving, in the magic of the gift that was the Christ-child.

To all my friends and family, to anyone who happens across this page, whether you believe in Jesus, in Allah, in the pantheon of Hindu gods, in the Buddha, in a Supreme Being or in no particular power, I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Season’s Greetings!

Merry Christmas!

Chips!

I’m a bit under the weather, so just a quick one to tide me over.

In almost every village area in Guyana, you either have walking, riding or driving vendors crying out their “wares”, I think some of the famous ones are “Broom Here!!!”, “Papers! Papers!, Kaieteur, Chronicle, Stabroek, Times! Papers!” and of course “Chips! Chips! Chips!, fresh chips!

Maybe I’ll get the others another time, but for now here’s one of the Chips salesmen  🙂
