2015 Deck – Week 48

The photo did not come out as I had hoped, despite several efforts with the phone, and even though my DSLR was sitting right there, I had my mind so set on an Instagram photo for this one that I never even took a photo of it with the DSLR.

This was probably a case of a smartphone without a smart user, I just could not get the focus right, no matter how hard I tried, and I tried, many times…. but I still like the concept of the shot.

I was sitting at the table, and barely noticed this little battery sitting on the glass table-top, I tried very hard with the phone to get the battery in focus while keeping the wall and its reflection on the table-top as a background… but nothing I did would keep the battery in focus long enough for me to click 🙂

2015 Deck – Week 43

This was one of those photos when you’re very glad you noticed the subject/scene and that you had a phone handy that had a decent camera built-in.

I suppose the “not-so-fast” fast food service helped by giving me the opportunity to sit and wait, and in waiting notice the shot 🙂

There I was, sitting at a table in the fast-food delivery section of the New Thriving Chinese Restaurant on Main Street, when I noticed the reflection of the backlit Menu on the glass table top, pretty much could not resist taking the photo.

Stride

This is Georgetown, Guyana, if you walk through the streets, you’re bound to come across a few characters before you walk a few city blocks, photographing them is a whole different story.

Most people are very wary of cameras, they believe you’re either some foreigner trying to “make money off their image” or “from the papers”, apparently people just being photographers who do it for fun or for art isn’t something they’ve quite gotten used to as yet.

When Nikhil pointed out this man to me, we were walking toward the curb, and I quickly snapped photos from the hip… almost like a spray and pray technique 🙂

I had the Canon EOS 60D with the Canon 40mm pancake lens on, as I never did get the “shoot from the hip” method quite right, this one had to have some rotational cropping done to make it presentable, but I really wanted one to share as there was something about this fellow that made a photo compelling.

Seen large, he’s wearing a t-shirt (or vest) under that shirt that has USA emblazoned across the chest… 🙂

2014 Deck – Week 47

I don’t often do these types of shoots, but when I do I usually have fun, it allows me some experimentation and I get to be in a place that few would have seen before… A new Bar.

My friend Diane asked me to take a few photos of a new Bar that she was going to run, well, sorta new, it was originally located at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, but has now been relocated to the Midtown Hotel, it’s Friendly’s Bar, and it’s pretty cool.

The nice thing was that she and Larry did not want people in the shots at this time (hopefully I get to go back to do some with people), so I got to be as free with my shots as I liked (and a couple free drinks)

Midday Sleeper…

…and the Ghostly Kirk.

This building was (at the time of the fire that destroyed it) known as the King Solomon Building, which also housed the offices of Travel Span airlines. Growing up, I always knew it as Joe Chin Travel Services. It was the building next to the lot that housed the Sacred Heart Church, also destroyed by fire.

It makes me wonder about the other buildings on the block, maybe I should take some photos of them before something dreadful (and permanent) also happens to them 🙂

I titled this photo the Midday Sleeper and the Ghostly Kirk. The “Midday Sleeper” part is an homage to a series of photos by a photographer (Simon) that I know as Darkhalide Photography, and the “Ghostly Kirk” is a reference to the ghostly reflection of my friend Kirk in the glass panel to the right of the doorway, I don’t think you can see it unless viewed very large.

2011 Deck – Week 26

I’ve been delinquent in my posts recently, but I have a really really good excuse…. no I don’t, I’ve just been busy. I can’t even conjure up a plausible excuse that might fool a school teacher on this one.

Recently I’ve been thinking about the past and the future, for this post I’ll deal with the past. As you know I recently posted a photo of St Barnabas, a church that will soon be just a memory, and in my case a few thousand pixels worth of data, and on a recent walk with Nikhil (during which I think I accomplished a grand total of three shutter actuations) I took a photo of a piece of architecture that always fascinated me, for one reason and one reason only, the tower!

I’ve always dreamt of having a tower on my dwelling that I could climb into and see the world around me, and since I’ve taken up photography, probably capture amazing sunset and sunrise photographs from it. Of course, I don’t have any such tower or photographer’s perch, so I just admire the ones that exist.

Of course, this building also has other “architectural” interests, like the Demerara Shutters, the wooden louvres and the shingled outer wall.

The Deck Weeks 31 and 32

I have to play catch-up this week, since I missed out on uploading my Deck photo for last week, so this week is a double upload and blog. I had already decided what photograph I would have most likely used for the Deck, but I did not get a chance until this week to process the remaining images from my vacation.

The Deck photo for Week 31 is a parting shot from St Martin, over on the French side, on the beach front near Marigot, we were waiting for the boat to arrive for our final adventure, a chance to see the corals and fishes under the sea through the transparent underside of a “glass-bottomed” boat. My underwater shots came out terrible, but I loved this scene from the shore:

In the last week, I took photographs on three occasions, one was at a funeral, the other two were on afternoon walks with Nikhil, but for some reason I was not getting the “feel” for the scenes or subjects. My final photograph of today turned out to be one that I was pleasantly surprised with, I took another shot at the New Thriving Chinese Restaurant. The image is a pseudo-HDR, since I also wanted to try out a new software that Nikhil had recently introduced me to, it is still in the Beta (testing) stage, but I am rather impressed by it. It introduces a new type of HDR called HDR ReLight as well as doing the regular tone mapping type HDR, but it also processes RAW files, which I shoot primarily. This was the portion that I wanted to try, and I was rather pleased with the result, the software is Oloneo PhotoEngine, give it a try if you like HDRs or you shoot in RAW.
